Giveaway Time!

Hey y'all!  It's time for a giveaway!  Woot!  And boy do I have something super cute for you!

A few weeks back I photographed some items from the fabulous etsy shoppe For The Little Peeps.  Jodi, the owner makes adorable (and personalized, and custom!) embroidered goodies for your little peeps!  Let me tell you that these shirts are top notch, and oh-so-cute.  Check out all of her latest creations on her blog.

Jodi also makes custom felt hair accessories, baby blankies, bibs, crayon aprons and ruffle pants, and she has graciously given a $25 gift certificate to one of YOU lucky readers!

So!  To enter the giveaway, it's easy!  Go "LIKE" Little Loves Photography on Facebook.  Go over to For the Little Peeps on Facebook and like her too!  Then hop back to the LLP page and click on the "win it" tab and fill out the form!

I will choose a random entry for ONE winner (via random.org) on 3/7/2012.  The winner will be announced on the FB page, and on the blog on 3/8/2012.

You will have 48 hours to claim your prize or another winner will be chosen.

Feel the LOVE | Apex NC Photographer

A couple of weeks ago this sweet family and I got together to take some portraits.  Have you ever been around folks and their love was palpable?  <3

We had a great time playing around outside, despite the chilly (but sunny!) weather.  Nothin' like a big 'ol field to play in!  I had to bust out all the stops to get the boys to crack a smile, but smile they did.  Next time I will know which trick(s) to employ.  HA!

Love.Captured | Raleigh Maternity Photographer

So, have you read my "about me" section?  You have?  Great!  (if not, I'll hang on a second while you mosey on over and check it out)  If you have, you know that I just ADORE capturing love. Passion. Beauty. Fun.

Last weekend I had the pleasure of photographing the sister of a client, who happens to be expecting her first little boy!  Such an exciting time.  Maternity sessions are so much fun!  Plus, it makes me happy to photograph a family just before they grow!  Here's a little sneak-a-peak of the gorgeous mama (and daddy) to be!

Rule of Thirds

Rule of Thirds

Hey folks!  Long time no talk!  I’m a bad, bad blogger! (I promise, I have a really, really good excuse!)

Here’s the first topic of our series on how to improve your photographs.  So let’s talk composition in regards to (cue echo-y announcer voice)… The Rule of Thirds…

Do you tend to center your subjects in the frame?  You do?  You’re not alone!  While it is not ‘wrong’ necessarily, it can sometimes be…well…boring!  Want to break out of your rut once in a while?  Read on.

The Rule of Thirds is a common principle of composing your photographs.  To do this, you would split your image into thirds, both horizontally and vertically so you have 9 symmetrical sections.

The theory behind the rule of thirds is to place your subject(s) or main focus on either one of the 4 intersecting points made by the lines, or on one of the lines itself.  This will create both an interesting and balanced image.

Lets talk about the image above.  It’s “OK” right?  It is a nice image, the colors are nice, the subject is nice, it is nice and in focus.  Do you see a pattern?  It’s NICE.  Sometimes, you just have to go for that WOW factor.  Throw things off kilter a bit!

So let’s bring in our rule of thirds.  (there are some other ‘rules’ of composition in place here, but we’ll save them for another lesson).  Now take a look at the image.  More interesting, right?  Notice how your eye moves directly to the subject’s face (this is Bailey, by the way, my Lab) and not sort of all around the image.

In a well composed image, your eye will move right to the subject, and back out through a predetermined path, not wandering all around, wondering what to focus on.

So go forth!  Try composing things differently!  Practice makes perfect!  Once you’ve perfected the Rule of Thirds, you can then BREAK it!  Rules are made to be broken, right?  Some of the world’s most influential artists/photographers got where they are because they broke the rules.  Just remember, you can’t break them until you know them inside and out!

Photo Tip Feature

I thought I would start a little section of the blog where we can delve into some tips on the how/why and logic behind a good photograph.  I can't wait to share a bit with you, and I'd love if  you would send me your images to share!  That said, you do NOT need a fancy camera to employ most of these tips.  However, an entry level DSLR will get you anywhere you want to go!

Would you like to know what's in my camera bag?  I'll tell you - no secrets here!
Camera(s)
Canon 5D (full frame sensor)
Canon Rebel XT (sub-frame/compact sensor)

Lenses
Tamron 28-75mm (2.8)
Canon 50mm (2.8)
Tamron 75-300mm
Kit lens (came with Rebel XT)

I primarily shoot with the Tammy 2.8 lens on my 5D body.  They give me so much flexibility!  That said, I shot with the Rebel for 4 years with no complaints.  Better equipment will NOT net you better photos if you do not know the basics!

First topic to be covered (Later this week) is The Rule of Thirds!  Be ready!

stunning...and fun! {pittsboro area photographer}

So what do you get when you cross a 3 legged dog (who poses for photos, thank you very much), a 'tween' (my first time ever shooting one) and her bestie, some chickens and an absolutely magical property in Pittsboro?  FUN!  We had SO much fun doing this shoot, despite the freezing temps.  The bestie did a great job making miss M laugh...and so did Rocky, our 3 legged posing dog ;-)

This is why I absolutely LOVE coming to you for portraits.  I get to learn more about you, and we get to do what you like best!  Well miss M, you certainly 'brought it' (hello modeling much?!) and I hope you like these mom! :)
